It may have taken awhile, but the Tony Award-winning stage version of
John Waters' cult classic
Hairspray finally made its way across the pond and
opened last week in London's Shaftesbury Theatre to
rapturous reviews. The new production stars
Michael Ball as Edna, newcomer
Leanne Jones as Tracy and
Mel Smith as Wilbur, seen above in a Turnblad family portrait.
With a score by
Marc Shaiman and
Scott Wittman, director
Jack O’Brien and choreographer
Jerry Mitchell oversaw the West End production (which is currently booking through March 15).
