The American Film Institute has named the winners of their 2008 AFI Awards. Their top ten includes two comic book superheroes (The Dark Knight and Iron Man), a robot (WALL-E), a man who ages backwards (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and a professional wrestler (The Wrestler), plus the based-on-fact Frost/Nixon and Milk, indie faves Frozen River and Wendy and Lucy and, of course, Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino).The AFI "Almanac Honors" will be presented to the creative ensembles for each of this year's recipients in a special luncheon in Los Angeles on January 9.
In other award news from over the weekend, the 13th Annual Satellite Awards were handed out last night. The Best Picture winners were Slumdog Millionaire (Drama) and Happy-Go-Lucky (Comedy or Musical), with these two films also winning, respectively Best Director (Danny Boyle) and Best Actress (Sally Hawkins). Other acting award honors went to The Visitor's Richard Jenkins, Changeling's Angelina Jolie, Ghost Town's Ricky Gervais, Revolutionary Road's Michael Shannon and Rachel Getting Married's Rosemarie DeWitt (thereby ending Penélope Cruz's winning streak).
