Today is National Coming Out Day, and what better way to celebrate it then with one of the best coming out movies, Edge of Seventeen.Chris Stafford plays a sexually confused teenager who has a very eventful summer. He looses his virginity, goes to a gay bar for the first time, has his heart broken, and comes out to his mother. Along the way, he does a lot of growing up, and even manages to find himself a little in the process.
From a semi-autobiographical script by Todd Stephens, director David Moreton handles these events realistically, honestly and with the right amount of humor. For anyone, like myself, who listened to Annie Lennox and Bronski Beat during their formative years, the story is easily relatable. And as a bonus, you also get Lea DeLaria in one of her few film appearances.
