MD Review: A Buzz Life

The Toy Story spin-off Lightyear bills itself as "Andy's favorite movie" from 1995 (the year the original Toy Story came out), although, let's be real here, no big budget Hollywood wannabe-blockbuster at that time would have gone near the gay-friendly subplot that, even in 2022, is getting this movie banned in certain countries. Like a lot of Pixar fare of late, Lightyear's story is a little too over-thought and it's characters are a little too broad, and one can't help but wonder how much more interesting this whole project would have been if it had been done in live action (imagine... Chris Evans in the flesh as a real Buzz Lightyear of Star Command). Still, Lightyear is an entertaining romp of 'sci-fi lite', better than one expects from a movie that nobody ever asked for or really needed.

MD Rating: 7/10

Lightyear is now streaming on Disney+.
