To conclude the Movie Dearest countdown to the Oscars via our weekly spotlight profiles, this week's Out in Film focuses not on movie stars or celebrities, but the two women who are the subject matter of Freeheld, one of this year's Academy Award nominated documentary short subjects.
When New Jersey police detective Laurel Hester is diagnosed with lung cancer and learns she has less then a year to live, she requests that her earned pension go to her partner of six years, Stacie Andree. County officials refuse her request on the grounds that they are not a heterosexual couple. The forty-minute film chronicles their battle for justice in a tragic race against time.
