Spencer Tracy has the distinction of being the first actor to win two Academy Awards in a row, the first for his unlikely yet convincing performance as a Portuguese fisherman in Captains Courageous. The following year, he won again portraying another kindly protector of youth, as the real-life Father Flanagan in Boys Town.
As a publicity stunt, MGM stated that Tracy would donate his Academy Award to the real Boys Town ... which was news to Tracy. He agreed to do so if the Academy would provide him with a replacement Oscar, which they did. However, when he received it, the engraving on the award addressed him as "Dick Tracy".
Boys Town, which also won an Oscar for writing and was nominated for three more, including Best Picture, airs tomorrow at 10:30 AM EST on Turner Classic Movies.
