The simulator ride based on the semi-classic 70's disaster epic Earthquake closed recently at Universal Studios Florida to undergo what sounds like little more then a face-lift. The attraction, which was one of the park's opening day attractions in 1990, will dump the dated pre-show (featuring grainy footage of the film's star, Charlton Heston) and be re-themed as a generic thrill ride, with no direct movie tie-in. And you can't get more generic (or groan inducing) then the new name, "Disaster! A Major Motion Picture Ride ... Starring You". (Although I do admire their restraint in not putting another exclamation mark in there at the end.)
That's right, it will be "interactive", a theme park fad that has overstayed its welcome, in my opinion (sorry, but I prefer to sit back and let them entertain me, thank you very much). "Blockbuster celebrity talent" will also be featured, though no specific names have been mentioned (Victoria Principal and Marjoe Gortner, call your agents!). In a quick turnaround, the updated attraction will reopen in December (yes, next month), just in time to shake up holiday guests all over again.
