From Hollywood to Broadway: Strike!

A Chorus Line isn't the only line on Broadway these days ... now there are those of the picket variety.

The local stagehand union went on strike yesterday, forcing several plays and musicals (including Hairspray, now starring Cheers alum George Wendt as Edna Turnblad) to cancel performances. Oddly enough, some shows (such as Mary Poppins, Xanadu and Young Frankenstein) are not affected by the strike, as they are under a different contract, so the show will go on in some theaters.

This comes at a time of another major show biz strike you may have heard about, that of the Writers Guild (I haven't covered it here because, well, everyone else is), which is shutting down TV shows left and right. Film production should not be effected for the foreseeable future, but it may hit the upcoming awards season, such as the Golden Globe and Oscar telecasts. And we can't have that, can we? Here's to a fast resolution (favoring the unions) for both of these tragic interruptions to our entertainment lives.
