The Latest in Theaters: No Brainer for Film Fans

Not a lot to choose from this week, but what there is could result in a potential classic, a likely also-ran and a pretty-much-for-certain stinker:

- No Country for Old Men: Cinephiles and fan boys alike have been chomping at the bit to get a look at the Coen Brothers' latest, a throwback to their Fargo days about ordinary folk caught up in crimes gone bad. Real bad, in this case, as the body count on this one is reportedly real high, thanks to psychotic assassin Javier Bardem (his catch phrase, "Just call it, friend-o", is sure to enter the lexicon as the next great badass movie quote). Tommy Lee Jones (a natural for the Coens who has surprisingly never worked with them before) plays a county sheriff and Josh Brolin (in a star-making turn) is a local loner who appears to be in the right place at the right time, but you know how those things turn out. Based on the novel by Cormack McCarthy, the film also stars Woody Harrelson, Kelly Macdonald and Tess Harper.

- Lions for Lambs: On the other hand, this latest war-themed drama looks to be added to the list of similar recent non-starters (In the Valley of Elah, Rendition), even if it stars a trio of cinematic titans: Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, who also directed.

- Fred Claus: Paul Giamatti is Santa and Vince Vaughn is his black sheep brother in this year's cinematic coal in everyone's stocking, a growing trend among holiday-themed movies ... Deck the Halls, Christmas With the Kranks, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. No wonder everyone watches It's a Wonderful Life over and over again.
