Queer Eye for the AFI

The American Film Institute's 21st Annual AFI Fest kicked off this year's festivities yesterday with the triple threat of Robert Redford, Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise in Lions for Lambs (or, as Big Edie calls it, The Lions of the Lambs). Big Hollywood premieres aside, the festival will also screen some smaller pics from the gay indie front:
  • Chris & Don. A Love Story: Documentary detailing the life of author Christopher Isherwood and artist Don Bachardy.
  • Hollywood Chinese: Arthur Dong's look at Chinese American film artists, including interviews with Ang Lee, Joan Chen, Nancy Kwan and B.D. Wong.
  • Light Work Mood Disorder and He Walked Away: Two works from experimental filmmaker Jennifer Reeves.
  • Manuela y Manuel: A drag queen posing as his best friend's fiancĂ© is just the beginning of the shenanigans in this comedy from Puerto Rico.
  • Solos: Censored in its native Singapore and based on a true story, this wordless drama examines a doomed teacher-student love.
  • Viva: "You’re not only a whore, you’re a filthy lesbian." That's just one of the goodies in store in this John Waters-esque "tribute/parody to soft-core pornography and sexual liberation".
AFI Fest continues through November 11.

I saw "Solos". It is a beautifully done take on a sensitive subject.
