Why Greased Lightning Could Not Strike Twice

There are always bizarre rumors floating around these internets of ours about upcoming film-related projects (such as the bogus Brokeback Mountain musical or sequel) that are almost always pure fiction. I tend to sit on them until a reliable source (not OK Magazine) chimes in, usually reporting that it is all rubbish. The latest headscratcher to come down the pike is "news" that -- blasphemy! -- a Grease remake is in the works.

Now, I am not usually one to jump on the "remakes suck!" bandwagon, but come on. There is no way they could match the success of the original Grease, still (almost 30 years later) the highest grossing movie musical of all time. Isn't Hairspray and High School Musical enough, you know, high school musicals for now? And don't forget the already in the works remakes of Fame and Footloose (could the third film in the 80's "F" trilogy -- Flashdance -- be far behind?).

What does lend this story some fraction of credence is that it supposedly came from the mouth of Grease 2 star Michelle Pfeiffer in an interview with News.com.au (what are they smokin' down under?). Ignoring the fact that a studio (in this case, it would be Paramount) isn't even mentioned in the article (a sure sign that it's all crap), the article goes on to mention that Jessica Simpson (?!) is the choice for the new Sandy Olsson (nee Dumbrowski) and, furthermore, Pfeiffer thinks "she would be good". Well, we all know La Pfeiffer has good taste (Charlie Chan and the Curse of the Dragon Queen aside), so there's your proof that all this is just some Aussie Employee of the Month fan's idea of a good idea.

UPDATE: It took awhile, but now even the Internet Movie Database has picked up on this "story" ... wonder how long it will be before they "rubish" it?

The rights are so tightly held by the the Robert Stigwood Organization (RSO) the original producers of GREASE that I can't see it being re-made anytime soon.

The gossip of the period when the film was made has a lot do with why I don't see it as a feasible possibility, along with a lot of original producers now being deceased along with several of the original power players who got it to the screen in the first place. and lets not forget Michy's disasterous sequel with Maxwell Caufield, who's dick I saw on stage in "Entertaining Mr. Sloane"

Interesting side note: when you type in "Grease" on Imdb, it pulls up "Grease" and "Grease 2", but also lists "High School Musical" 1, 2 and 3 as "Grease" 3, 4 and 5?!

And if you're going to bring up Maxwell Caulfield's little Max, you should at least elaborate on the experience ...

I had that same experience with IMDB which sucks more than its pretenious will ever admit. They list David Kirkpatrick as a crew member at the same time he was President of Paramount. Like he needed to hold a boom mike so he could oggle pretty extras on any of the studios pictures.

It has been a while since I saw Little Max but I doo recal thick and fleshy and pretty sure uncut, he is Brit after all. Does Billy Flynn have a nude scene in CHICAGO?
