Although it only received one Academy Award nomination (for Film Editing), this wartime actioner has stood the test of time to become the ultimate "escape from prison" movie. Who could forget, for example, Steve McQueen's daring motorcycle getaway?And for us connoisseurs of the "celluloid closet", there is the added bonus of the striking bond between the two prisoners played by Charles Bronson and John Layton. Totally devoted to each, the "Tunnel King" and his mate make for an unlikely yet totally accepted couple ... they even enjoy a happy ending, unlike some of the other characters in this fact-based classic.
