Roy Scheider, star of what is considered the first ever summer blockbuster, Jaws, has died at the age of 75.
In addition to his memorable role as Police Chief Martin Brody (which he reprised in the sequel, Jaws 2), Scheider appeared in such other classic thrillers as Klute, Marathon Man and The French Connection, receiving his first Oscar nomination for the latter. However, his best performance was as the thinly veiled Bob Fosse character in All That Jazz, which garnered him another Academy Award nomination.
Other notable films include Blue Thunder, 2010, The Russia House, Naked Lunch, Romeo is Bleeding and The Myth of Fingerprints (which netted him an Independent Spirit Award nod). He also headlined the science fiction television series SeaQuest DSV.
