The Latest on DVD: Where No Trans Has Gone Before

Quark, the short-lived sci-fi sitcom created by Buck Henry and starring Richard Benjamin as an intergalactic garbage collector, has long been the go-to punchline when it comes to bad TV. Now you'll get a chance to finally see if it lives up to that bad reputation, as all eight episodes are being released today on DVD as Quark: The Complete Series.

One character that may be of interest to GLBT audiences is the spaceship's chief engineer Gene/Jean (played by Tim Thomerson). Described as a "transmute", Gene/Jean possessed both male and female chromosomes and could switch back and forth between the macho Gene and the frivolous Jean personas, usually at the most inopportune times. You can see a bit of him/her in action in this ten-minute clip from the series' pilot.
