The plucky, perky Poppy in Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky gives Pollyanna a run for her money in the irrepressibly cheerful department. And Sally Hawkins' performance of said Poppy is giving a host of A-list actresses a run for their money as far as awards go as well.To date, the until-now mostly unknown British lass has won five Best Actress trophies (more than any else so far), including the Silver Bear from the Berlin International Film Festival and kudos from both the New York and Los Angeles critics groups (who very rarely, if ever, agree on anything). Plus, she is the front-runner for the Golden Globe, not to mention the very likely possibility of an invite to the Academy Awards in the near future.
Is it no wonder she's so cheerful.
