Respected character actor James Whitmore, who appeared in such classics as Them! and The Shawshank Redemption, passed away yesterday at the age of 87.Whitmore, who won such awards as the Golden Globe, Tony and Emmy throughout his long career, was nominated twice for the Academy Award, for Battleground and Give 'em Hell, Harry! In the latter, he portrayed Harry S. Truman, recreating his acclaimed stage performance. Whitmore was an expert at one-man shows such as this; he also found success with similar productions based on the lives of Will Rogers and Theodore Roosevelt.
Other notable films he appeared in include The Asphalt Jungle, Kiss Me Kate, Battle Cry, Oklahoma!, Planet of the Apes, Tora! Tora! Tora!, Nuts and The Majestic.

How great was it that he cut a PSA, the whole time smoking a pipe.
He was another one of those guys who those wanting to be in the profession studied; he just made so damn easy and there aren't many people who can do that today.
LOL, I thought the same thing about the pipe. He probably thought nothing of it and nobody had the nerve to tell him otherwise.
