The Latest on DVD: Bette Davis Eyes

In celebration of what would have been Bette Davis' 100th birthday this Saturday, both Warner and Fox are releasing new DVD box sets this week and next:

• Available today, Warner's The Bette Davis Collection, Volume 3includes six new to DVD classics starring the screen legend: All This, and Heaven Too (an excellent tear-jerker, co-starring Charles Boyer), Deception, The Great Lie (also featuring an Oscar winning Mary Astor), In This Our Life, The Old Maid and Watch on the Rhine (starring an Oscar winning Paul Lukas).
• Next week brings Fox's Bette Davis Centenary Celebration Collection,which features her immortal Margo Channing in All About Eve, as well as her title characters in Hush ... Hush, Sweet Charlotte, The Nanny and The Virgin Queen, plus Phone Call from a Stranger.

Jules Dassin: 1911-2008

Jules Dassin, the Tony and Academy Award-nominated writer/director of the stage and screen versions of Never on Sunday, has died.

Dassin co-starred in Sunday with his future wife, Melina Mercouri, who became an international star and Oscar nominee herself with the film; she was also Tony nominated for Illya Darling, the Broadway musical version of their most famous collaboration.

Other films of his include The Naked City, Brute Force, Topkapi and Rififi.
