Awards Watch: Horray for Hollywood

... and for Hairspray! The Movie Dearest favorite will be awarded three prizes (more then any other film) at this year's Hollywood Film Festival: Producers of the Year (Craig Zadan and Neil Meron), Ensemble of the Year and Supporting Actor for John Travolta.

Three of the remaining acting awards are for biographical roles: Richard Gere will be honored as Actor of the Year for playing "fake" Howard Hughes biographer Clifford Irving in The Hoax, while Casey Affleck nets the Breakthrough Actor prize for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. And if you don't know Marion Cotillard's name, learn it now. Her acclaimed turn as chanteuse Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose nabbed her her first of what will likely be many Best Actress trophies.

Another no-brainer: Juno's Ellen Page is the fest's Breakthrough Actress of the Year. The quirky comedy also netted Diablo Cody the Breakthrough Screenwriter prize. Jennifer Connelly rounds out the acting awards for her supporting performance in Reservation Road.

Marc Forster, the helmer of the controversial The Kite Runner, was named Director of the Year. Actor-turned-director Ben Affleck (who won their supporting actor award last year for Hollywoodland) is the Breakthrough Director winner for his debut, Gone, Baby, Gone, while Brad Bird takes the Animation prize for Ratatouille. Other films that will be honored include Atonement, Lions for Lambs, Charlie Wilson's War, Sweeney Todd and Transformers.

These awards, which will be presented in a ceremony October 22 in (where else) Hollywood, may or may not factor into the higher profile races later this year (last year, only The Last King of Scotland's Forest Whitaker continued a notable winning streak after winning here). But they do give us an early taste of things to come.
