The award-winning stage musical based on the Disney animated hit The Lion King recently celebrated its 10th anniversary on the Great White Way (making it the ninth longest-running show in Broadway history). To mark the special occasion, the Empire State Building was bathed in "Lion King yellow" last Friday night. Only in New York. (Unfortunately, due to the stagehand strike, the performance on the actual anniversary -- November 11 -- was cancelled.)
Julie Taymor's highly stylized recreation of the Oscar-winning movie opened in 1997 to rave reviews and won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Sold-out national tours and several international productions continue to spread King's reign around the world.
For a look back at the original cast, here are a couple videos featuring two of the stage version's original songs: "Endless Night", performed by the late Jason Raize as Simba, and "Shadowlands", sung by Heather Headley as Nala.
