Anti-Christian ... or Just Plain Gay?

At first glance, New York Magazine's recent list of "The Ten Most Anti-Christian Movies of All-Time" seems to be pretty self-explanatory. I mean, when it comes to film, you can't get more Anti-Christian then Kevin Smith's Dogma or Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (not too mention the crucifixion of poor Piper Laurie in Carrie).

However, looking closer, it's not too hard to find another common thread weaving its way through most of this "unholy" ten: what the religious wingnuts call the "sin of homosexuality" (they make it sound so dirty). Sure, we got everything from the subtly homoerotic (The Name of the Rose, check) to the blatantly obvious (Priest, double check) to the artfully subversive (Pier Paolo Pasolini's The Canterbury Tales, quadruple check), but when even Jesus Camp has a bit of gay subtext (icky as it is), one is forced to acknowledge the pink elephant in this particular room.

So what is the gayest movie on this list? Well, Carrie (with its subliminal lesbian undertones and the whole "outsider" thing) comes close, but you can't get much gayer then Footloose. All the new kid with the over-moused hair wants to do is dance? Let's hear it for the boy indeed.
