Awards Watch: Los Angeles Critics

Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood swept today's Los Angeles Film Critics Association awards, snatching up four of them, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis. The stark, turn-of-the-century oil drama (based on the novel by Upton Sinclair) also placed second in three other categories, hinting at strong west coast support for the film that could factor into LA-based Academy votes down the line.

The critics group's actress picks, Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) and Amy Ryan (for both Gone Baby Gone and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead), aren't unexpected, but their Best Supporting Actor -- Vlad Ivanov for the Romanian abortion drama 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, which was also named Best Foreign Language film -- continues the group's recent trend of honoring obscure performances. The Iraq war documentary No End in Sight edged out Michael Moore's Sicko in that category, while Ratatouille and Persepolis tied for the animated prize.

Among the special awards, actress Sarah Polley received the "New Generation" award for her directorial debut, Away from Her, while one of the newly created "Film Legacy" awards went to the OutFest Legacy Project, for its efforts in the restoration of such classic GLBT films as Parting Glances.
