Awards Watch: NAACP Image Awards 2007

The Great Debaters' Denzel Washington nabbed his 15th (!) NAACP Image Award, proving once and for all that there is such a thing as an embarrassment of riches. The Civil Rights drama swept the field, also winning the group's Best Picture award and two more acting trophies for co-stars Jurnee Smollett and Denzel Whitaker (yes, he was named after his director; maybe the Image Awards should follow suit).

At least Washington didn't also win for Best Director; Kasi Lemmons took home that honor for Talk to Me, which also won for its screenplay. And get this: Janet Jackson (Miss Jackson if you're nasty) won Supporting Actress (for Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?) over Academy Award nominated acting legend Ruby Dee (for American Gangster); well, at least Dee got a consolation prize.

As for the TV awards, Ugly Betty's America Ferrera and Vanessa Williams triumphed in the comedy categories, and Grey's Anatomy and its scene-stealer Chandra Wilson won on the drama side.
