The Latest in Theaters: Swede Dreams Are Made of This

Although most movie fans will be pinned to their various electronic boxes (television set, computer monitor) this weekend for the Oscars, there are a few new releases opening this week:
  • Be Kind Rewind: Is it a Jack Black comedy, an art house film ... or both? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind director Michel Gondry is at the helm for this cult movie in the making, a story of a two friends (Black and Mos Def) who, when their video store stock is erased by Black's magnetized brain (seriously), recreate classic movies (called "sweding" the movies because, well, they come from Sweden). New Line recently ran a contest for fans to "swede" their own favorite flicks; even Gondry himself got into the act, recreating scenes from ... Be Kind Rewind. It's all very meta ...
  • Vantage Point: Matthew Fox, Dennis Quaid, Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt and Forest Whitaker star in this Rashomon-style thriller about an attempted presidential assassination.
  • Charlie Bartlett: Anton Yelchin (a.k.a. the next Chekov) stars as the new kid in school who sets up shop in the boys' room as a therapist. Robert Downey Jr. and Hope Davis co-star.
  • Cover: This dramatic thriller (opening in limited release) hinges on the "down low" lifestyle. See AfterElton.com for full, uh, coverage, including the film's misleading trailer.
