Esther Williams was known as "America's Mermaid", so it is no surprise that her best movie was called Million Dollar Mermaid. Filled with all the splashy spectacle and over-the-top water balletics one can expect from a Williams picture, this one actually delivers a little bit more in that it was based on the life of another swimming sensation, Annette Kellerman.
Kellerman, known as an "advocate for the change of women's swimwear" (she scandalously paraded around in a one-piece), also invented the sport of synchronized swimming at the famed New York Hippodrome. Also a movie star, she was the first major actress to do a nude scene on film.
Million Dollar Mermaid, which was Oscar nominated for its cinematography, will air on Turner Classic Movies tomorrow at 6:00 AM EST.
