- Michael Clayton- The legal thriller picked up seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for first-timer Tony Gilroy, who is also nominated for his original screenplay. Nods for stars George Clooney, Tilda Swinton and Tom Wilkinson make this the only movie this year with more then one acting nomination.
- American Gangster- Although this Ridley Scott crime epic stars the one-two punch of heavyweights Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, it is Ruby Dee and the film's art directors who got the Academy recognition.
- In the Valley of Elah- For the first time in three years, Paul Haggis is not nominated. Instead, it was a surprise nomination for Tommy Lee Jones as Best Actor for this war-themed drama.
