Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler won the top prize, the Golden Lion, at the Venice Film Festival yesterday. The drama stars Mickey Rourke as a retired wrestler who strikes up a romance with an aging stripper played by Marisa Tomei. Rourke himself received a lot of credit for the film's success; none other then Wim Wenders says he turns in a "heartbreaking performance". Could this unexpected comeback launch the infamous Rourke into this year's Best Actor race?
Among the fest's other awards, the Italian low budget drama Un Altro Pianeta (Another Planet), directed by Stefano Tummolini, won the Queer Lion Award, given to films with GLBT subject matter.
