Awards Watch: Emmys 2009

The festivities began with a promising start on last night's Emmy Awards when a tearful but still adorable Kristin Chenoweth picked up the much-deserved honor as Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her daffy portrayal of the lovesick Olive Snook on the late, lamented Pushing Daisies. But the Emmy gods giveth, and they taketh away, for the male equivalent of that award was bestowed upon, not How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris as expected but ... Two and Half Men's Jon Cryer?

However, Harris got the last laugh (and then some) as he hosted the entire evening with charm and class, a smooth old school emcee in the tradition of Johnny Carson. His backgrounds in theater and magic were on full display as he razzle dazzled the crowd with a clever opening number (penned by Hairspray's Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman) and even managed to throw in a Dr. Horrible skit.

Meanwhile, HBO's Grey Gardens picked up three more trophies, including wins for Best TV Movie, Best Actress for Jessica Lange and Best Supporting Actor for Ken Howard. Other Movie Dearest faves among the winners: Glenn Close, Toni Collette, Cherry Jones and Lost's MVP (Most Villainous Player) Michael Emerson.

It was a great show. I really enjoyed the broadcast this year. It seemed to poke fun at itself and was not so serious.
