After months of teaser images and fake trailers, here it finally is: the official-for-real, honest-to-goodness, genuine Warner Bros.-made trailer for Tim Burton's film adaptation of the stage musical classic Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.The look, as would be expected, is all Burton, and though we do see a snippet of Johnny Depp singing, it is surprisingly light on the songs. You would think that after the success of Chicago and Hairspray, studio marketers wouldn't be so gun shy to put the "musical" in a trailer for, you know, a movie musical.
No matter, the one man that matters, composer Stephen Sondheim, has seen the whole film, and has given it his stamp of approval. Sweeney Todd will open wide this Christmas.

I just saw John Doyle's Tony-award winning version of Sweeney, which just started it's national tour in SF. It was amazing. I would recommend it to everyone who has the opportunity to see it.
I would also recommend the DVD of the television production of Harold Prince's version of Sweeney with Angela Lansbury.
THEN see the movie. But I have my doubts.... and the trailer didn't do anything to minimize them.
I agree, Dean. I'm looking forward to the movie, but the little bit of singing they did show did not convince me that Depp will be able to handle the role vocally.
I'm not so worried about Helena Bonham Carter though, Mrs. Lovett is more of a character role and not as demanding vocally.
