The Bad Boy of Broadway

Here's our first look at Cry-Baby, the next John Waters movie to hit the Great White Way (yeah, who'da thunk it?). The new tuner stars the hunky James Snyder in the title role (played by Johnny Depp in the original movie), a rebellious "Drape" with a soft side and an eye for a certain good girl gone bad. Tony Award-winning stage fave Harriet Harris (Thoroughly Modern Millie) also stars, as the prim mother of said good girl.

Book writers Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan (who won the Tony for Hairspray) are back, with a score by Adam Schlesinger (of Fountains of Wayne and That Thing You Do! fame) and David Javerbaum that includes such ditties as "The Anti-Polio Picnic", "Watch Your Ass", "I'm Infected" and "Baby Baby Baby Baby Baby (Baby Baby)" (I love it already). Mark Brokaw directs, with Rob Ashford (another Tony winning Millie alum) providing all the rockin' 'n rollin' dances.

The musical celebrated its world premiere earlier this week at the La Jolla Playhouse in preparation for a Broadway bow next spring, just in time for some more Tonys. (And a virtual Tony Award to whoever can spot the reference to a Tony Award-winning musical in the picture above.)

Too late the phalathrope?

Your question asked for the name of the Tony-winning musical. Ergo the correct answer is Les Miserable. Additionally it is correctly spelled Jean Valjean, bye the bye. Back to you Trebek.
